Shockwaves are mechanical impulses spreading like a wave when being transferred into water, air or solid material. Within a few nano-seconds, the pressure rises quickly, reaching a very high level.
Two different types of shockwave devices can be distinguished: |
1) Conventional devices produce focussed shockwaves. The maximum amount of energy is obtained at a focal point within the body. Those devices cannot be used without a focusing device. There is a risk that the area around the tendon is targeted by the focus, thus limitating the results. |
2) A new generation of shockwave devices produces unfocussed, respectively radial shockwaves, by means of a so-called ballistic principle. The maximum amount of energy is produced at the top of the applicator without any danger outside the body.

This new method with the Swiss DolorClast®, has changed pain therapy: The device is small, handy and mobile. It ensures a gentle and efficient treatment with pneumatically generated shockwaves which are transmitted into the area of pain by means of a freely moving applicator.
Impulse frequencies ranging from one to fifteen Hertz can be freely selected, allowing the duration of treatment to be kept as short as possible: A treatment with 2,000 impulses only takes about ten minutes. | |
